Here in Australia we're in back to school mode but in other parts of the world you may already be back into the routine… Most of these tips are still relevant because even returning after a weekend can have some 'reset' skills to it.
The backstory is I started researching this for myself as a parent and found 6 stand out tips from different sources that I wanted to share. Here is the best of what I found…
1. Talk about it loosely in advance. Feel the pulse on their feelings about it.
Younger child open ended question idea:
What are you excited about for school this term?
Older child question idea:
What would you like to get out of this first term?
Regardless of age; Conversations like this in advance can give parents some great intel… Is your child wanting to be more organised or manage their time better? Is there a subject they’re struggling in that they want to improve on? Maybe there’s something new they want to try this year. With this knowledge we can support our children in ways they want.
2. Model positive language about heading “back to school” ourselves.
As you discuss back-to-school time, aim to stay positive, even if you’re talking to another adult within earshot of your child.
3. Encourage self-advocacy skills and independence to whatever level is age appropriate.
Let’s teach our children to shamelessly reach out for support if they need it but aim for independence in the first instance.
〰️ If you need something; Ask politely for it
4. Send a message of TRUST
Keep interactions filled with confidence that you think your child can cope. They’ll feel much more empowered if they know you believe in their resilience & ability to adjust.
5. Lead by example to help your child feel calm and re-assured.
Especially for the first day it’s ideal to be organised and channel “cool as a cucumber” vibes
6. SMILE! 😁
A great reminder for any age child as parting words.
We can forget to smile when we’re nervous so a reminder can never go astray. Smiling sends a message to new friends and old that you’re open and ready for friendship⚡️

Looking out for others is good practice.
The world needs more of that 👌
